| No Referendum Mike Bennison, Friday, Nov. 18, 2005 |
Most Albertans believe there will be a referendum on independence. This is a misconception. Simply put, there will be no referendum on Alberta Independence when the Separation Party of Alberta wins a majority in the Alberta Legislature. One of the first bills we will pass will be a declaration of independence. In no way are we going to mirror Quebec. Quebec threatens to leave only to extort money from Ottawa. Much of that money originates in Alberta, so it is not much of a reach to realize there will be nothing left for Ottawa to bribe us with. Funny how that works. Now I want to explain why we are taking this direction. It gets rather sequential. Everything you have heard and read from every Canadian newscast - be it radio, television, magazine, newspaper, all forms of mass communication in this country - is controlled by the central government. The information they give us is slanted in favor of the central Canada viewpoint. It is this so-called central Canada viewpoint I want to address. Let's go back to 1939. In that year the federal government started a broadcast company called the C.B.C. The main reason for its inception was Canadian unity. In reality, it gave the federal government power to counter any foreign propaganda that might get into the country. The federal government wanted to have their propaganda dominant over enemy propaganda, which is understandable during times of war. WWII seemingly legitimized the need for control. Now, some 65 years later, the government has not changed, but the mode of operation has. They have entrenched a bureaucratic system that will insure their dominance over any information the public receives, forever. This is the CANADIAN RADIO & TV COMMISSION - the (infamous) C.R.T.C. Let me expand on this. If you own a broadcast outlet in this country, you must comply with a continuously increasing set of rules to keep your broadcast license. One rule states a majority of airtime be dedicated to Canadian content. This means promote the Central Government line and Central Canada propaganda or put your broadcast license in jeopardy. How does this connect with us not wanting Alberta to hold a referendum on independence? Simply this: With every major source of information for Albertans controlled and bombarded by Central Canada leading up to a referendum, all the government (through the broadcasters) would have to do is put a small confusing doubt in Albertans' minds - something to cloud the issues - and the movement would be lost. We all saw what happened to Quebec on their last referendum and how the media played out their part. We in the Separation Party will not let this kind of skullduggery affect the future of Alberta's livelihood. Can you just imagine the efforts of the Central Canadian controlled media, falling over themselves in a continuous barrage of propaganda and lies? One can only imagine how much effort the media will exert when it looks like we will win a majority in the legislature. This is a short overview of why we will not have a referendum. We are not in this for the option of getting a better deal out of Ottawa, or the so called "sovereignty association" program. This is a straightforward no-strings-attached deal. We are leaving with our prospects, our money, our lives and our liberties. No longer will Central Canada have dominance over us. No longer will we be working to support a system designed to deprive us of our resources. We will no longer be second-class citizens. We will use our resources to fix our health care, education, judiciary, industry, infrastructure and so forth. I could go on but I just want Albertans to understand our position and the reasons behind it. We think the truth is a refreshing change from the norm. Yours in independence President |
